Visiting Central Mississippi

Things are warming up in central Mississippi, and warmer weather means virtually endless opportunities for outdoor adventures at destinations like Lefleur's Bluff State Park and Golden Memorial State Park. It also means all sorts of special events, festivals, and family-friendly fun await visitors to communities like Jackson, Richland and Magee.

With spring in full bloom, it may be the best time to explore central Mississippi’s lush landscape by embarking on a scenic driving tour. Not only will Highway 82 travelers encounter countless reasons to stop off in towns like Indianola, Greenwood, and Columbus, but also a trip in just about any direction will lead to countless fishing holes, golf courses, historic sites, and more.

There's much to see and do in Jackson. At the Jackson Zoo, many of the animals who’d been hunkering down for the winter are as active as ever this time of year. In addition to being the home of 776 animals across 120 species, the Jackson Zoo also plays host to a variety of special events. You may want to leave the kids behind for the 2016 Zoo Brew on April 1st. Have a cold one while enjoying views of a variety of beautiful and exotic animals. There will also be live music, a chicken wing eating contest, and more – all starting at 4 p.m.

The 21st Annual Market Street Festival is this year’s edition of what has grown to become one of the state's most prized festivals. Downtown Columbus fills with hundreds of arts and crafts vendors and specialty food offerings as live music creates a festive atmosphere. A variety of other family-friendly fun also fills the day, beginning at 9 a.m. on both May 6th and 7th.

Take in a gorgeous spring sunset in the riverside community of Vicksburg while the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra provides a moving soundtrack. The 2016 Symphony at Sunset event is held at Vicksburg National Military Park on May 28th. The music gets underway at 7 p.m.

Music lovers also won’t want to miss the 2016 B.B. King Homecoming Festival, also taking place May 28th. Thousands will travel to Indianola to honor the late blues legend at the BB King Museum, where there will be live music and food in addition to the museum’s permanent exhibits and memorabilia.
