MS Division I Colleges
Rebels, Bulldogs, Golden Eagles, & More
College sports are epitomized by a few simple terms – pride, tradition, and community, and any Mississippian will quickly tell you their state is no stranger to those terms.
With five Division I colleges in the state, there is no shortage of thrilling action, infused with just enough southern charm and tradition to please even the most die-hard sports fan.
The Rebels' 18 varsity teams compete in the rough and tough Southeastern Conference (SEC) of the NCAA. Be sure to wear your navy blue and cardinal red and be prepared to sing "Hotty Toddy," the Rebels fight song.
For more hard-hitting, SEC action, head south to the town of Starkville, but be sure to sport some maroon and white first. The Mississippi State Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs make up 16 varsity teams and hold a fierce, in-state rivalry with the Ole Miss Rebels. Football, baseball, basketball – you name it, you'll find it. Sports fans flock from the neighboring city of Columbus to catch Bulldog home games year-round.
Southern Mississippi travelers will have plenty of electrifying NCAA action to choose from as well. Visit Hattiesburg and cheer on the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles and Lady Eagles' 14 Division I varsity teams. The Golden Eagles have the special distinction of being the only school in Mississippi to compete in Conference USA.
Head north from Hattiesburg on Mississippi highway 49 and you'll find yourself in Jackson, the state capital and home of the Jackson State Tigers and Lady Tigers. The Tigers compete in the Southwestern Atlantic Conference in all major sports.
Central Mississippi is also home to the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, fellow SWAC members and fierce rivals of the Jackson State Tigers. The Delta Devils field 13 varsity teams in the quaint college town of Itta Bena year round.
