Outdoor Fun in De Soto

Rivers & Trails, Plus the Parks of Wiggins

Mississippi Outdoors

De Soto National Forest

A four-season destination, the De Soto National Forest is a 400,000-acre forest in southern Mississippi. De Soto is located along the U.S. Highway 49 and U.S. Highway 98, between Gulfport to the south and Hattiesburg to the north.

One of six National Forests in Mississippi, De Soto is a must-see for any outdoor enthusiast visiting the Magnolia State.

The De Soto National Forest is home to two wilderness areas: Black Creek Wilderness and Leaf River Wilderness. A National Wild and Scenic River, Black Creek is the only river of its kind in Mississippi.

De Soto also encompasses two National Recreational Trails: Black Creek Trail and Tuxachanie Trail – together creating more than 60 miles of hiking trails. Outdoor enthusiasts can canoe in Black Creek, zip down the Rattlesnake Bay and Bethel ATV trails, or ride pleasantly down the Big Foot horse trail.

De Soto surrounds the Mississippi town of Wiggins, located just north of Gulfport and Biloxi. Known as the Gateway to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Wiggins also incorporates many recreational opportunities for outdoor lovers. Splash around at the Flint Creek Waterpark, play golf at the Pine Burr Country Club, and let the kids loose at Blaylock Park.
