Visiting the Mississippi River Delta

Communities along the Mississippi River Delta celebrate their heritage and culture this summer. From Tunica Resorts to Canton and Clinton, people from all over Mississippi head to Jackson to be a part of this year’s Freedom50 celebrations. Commemmorating the 52nd anniversary of the end of the system of rigid segregation in the state, Freedom50 takes place June 25th through 29th, bringing with it film screenings, luncheons, dances, the This Light of Ours Exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Art, and a blues and jazz festival.

On the north end of the Jackson area, the cultural celebrations continue with the 2016 CelticFest Mississippi at the Cabot Lodge Millsaps in Ridgeland. The Family-friendly fun includes dancing, live music and entertainment, cultural workshops, and kids’ activities. Mom and Dad can even take part in Irish whisky, scotch, and wine tastings. Late-summer visitors to Jackson will want to stick around for the fun – CelticFest Mississippi is held September 5th through 7th.

Midsummer visitors to Jackson head 15 minutes west to Clinton to celebrate America’s freedom this Fourth of July. The 2016 Family Fireworks Extravaganza takes over Traceway Park, featuring family-friendly fun. Children’s activities, food, and more begin at 5 p.m., closed out by an extravagant fireworks display around 9 p.m.

History buffs and visitors seeking even more of the Mississippi River Delta’s cultural heritage will find the community of Vicksburg rich with history. Vicksburg is the site of countless historic locales like Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum, the The Historic Klondyke Trading Post, the USS Cairo gunboat museum, and Vicksburg National Military Park, a Civil War battlefield offering guided and self-guided walking and driving tours.

Washington Street, in downtown Vicksburg, also serves as a great place to celebrate this July 4th. The 2016 Independence Day Fireworks Celebration starts with live music at 7 p.m., as shops and vendors along Washington Street between Grove and Jackson streets open up to offer food and novelty items before an impressive fireworks display lights up the sky and reflects against the water of the mighty Mississippi River.
