Gulf Islands National Seashore

The two barrier islands, named East Ship Island and West Ship Island, are collectively named Ship Island – and managed by the National Park Service. These beautiful islands are included in the Gulf Islands National Seashore – extending to the Florida coastline.

Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport
Originally the Gulfport Army Airfield, the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) was established in 1942 by the United States Army Air Forces.
GPT served as a training location for B-25 and B-29 crews for World War II. In 1953, a Combat Readiness Training Center was built on airport property, that is still used to train over 20,000 Air Guard and Reserve crew. The airport began commercial flights in the 1950s.
Today, GPT is operated by the Gulfport–Biloxi Regional Airport Authority, and supoprts a passenger service of over 2.5 million travelers each year.
Established in 1984, the Institute for Marine Mammal Studies is a non-profit group dedicated to education and protection of marine mammals across the globe. The institute is primarily located in Gulfport in southern Mississippi.
Institute visitors can expect a variety of education and interactive displays at the museum, including touch tanks and aquariums – maybe even dolphin interactions. The museum works with several of the state’s universities.
Located on the Beauvoir Historic Site, Jefferson Presidential Library in Biloxi is the actual library used by Confederate President Jefferson Davis during the Civil War. The library is found in Biloxi right off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The museum is chock-full of authentic documents, books, paperwork, records, and other unique artifacts from the mid 19th century. Visitors of nearby Gulfport can make the short journey into town and immerse themselves in unique history.
Opened in 1986, the Maritime Seafood Industry Museum is a maritime museum located in the Mississippi Gulf Coast city of Biloxi. The museum commemorates Biloxi’s seafood and fishing industry through a variety of interpretive exhibits.
Although the museum was greatly damaged by Hurricane Katrina, it was rebuilt in 2014 and has been in full operation since. Check out the museum’s Glenn L. Swetman and Mike Sekul schooners at the Schooner Pier Complex.
Opened in 2015, MGM Park is a minor league baseball stadium located in the coastal Mississippi city of Biloxi. The ballpark is home to the Biloxi Shuckers, the Double-A affiliate of Major League Baseball’s Milwaukee Brewers.

Opened in 1977, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center is a multi-purpose arena and entertainment venue nestled in the MS coastal city of Biloxi. The coliseum has been home to several sports teams, WWE events, concerts, and an NBA game between the New Orleans Pelicans and Atlanta Hawks.
Currently, the coliseum hosts the annual rock music CPR Festival, as well as one of the country’s largest crawfish festivals. Plan your trip accordingly and visit during the South Mississippi Summer Fair, also hosted at the coliseum.
Located in Vancleave near Biloxi in southern Mississippi, the Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge has protected Sand Hill Cranes since 1975. The endangered species has grown from 30 to 110 birds, since the refuge was established.
The refuge also protects the unique and diverse wet pine savanna, where the cranes live. The refuge encompasses over 19,000 acres and is part of the Gulf Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The refuge visitor center is available for tours, for a better look at the cranes.
While visiting coastal Mississippi, include time for cultural enrichment. Visit the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art to view the exhibits and works of art by George E. Ohr.
Since 1989, the creations of this Biloxi native have been on display, along with craftsman Pleasant Reed. The museum's beautiful campus was designed by architect Frank Gehry.
Stroll through the museum for permanent exhibits like "George Edgar Ohr: Selections from Gulf Coast Collections," "My House: The Plesant Reed Story," and "The Native Guard: A Photographic History of Ship Island's African American Regiment." With year-round special events hosted by the museum, there's plenty to see and do, at this southern Mississipi attraction.
Plan a visit to Mississippi and visit the coast for excellent views of the Gulf of Mexico, a range of beach activities, and impressive outdoor fun at local state parks. In Gautier, a short drive east from Biloxi, you'll discover the popular Shepard State Park – granting access to the Pascagoula River and playgrounds eqipment for the kids.
Check out Alligator Alley on your visit to Shepard State Park – 18 holes of disc golf and a great way to spend an afternoon. There are eight miles of nature trails, yielding excellent bird watching opportunities. You can launch your boat out onto the Pascagoula River at the St. Pierre Bayou. On any spring or summer day you visit, plan for a picnic at the picnic pavilion.
