Public Institutions in the Magnolia State
The state of Mississippi offers a multitude of public institutions located throughout the state. From the Gulf Coast to the Mississippi River Delta, many of the Magnolia State’s four-year universities feature historic campuses, amazing athletic departments, and groundbreaking degree programs.
Mississippi’s largest university, the University of Mississippi is located in northern Mississippi in the city of Oxford. Nicknamed the Ole Miss, the University of Mississippi’s main campus covers more than 2,000 acres – home to over 2,1000 students.
Don’t miss games with the Ole Miss Rebels, and be sure to see historic sites like the Lyceum, the Circle Historic District, and the Civil Rights Monument.
Established in 1848, Old Miss offers branch campuses found in Booneville, Grenada, Tupelo, and Southaven. Other sites include the University of Mississippi Field Station in Abbeville, and the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Mississippi State University was established in 1878, and has an enrollment of over 20,000 students. Set in Starkville in central Mississippi, MSU is officially known as Mississippi State University of Agriculture & Applied Science – or Mississippi A&M.
MSU features 12 colleges, and additionally campuses in Meridian, Biloxi, and Vicksburg. The MSU campus features the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Davis Wade Stadium, plus historic structures like Mitchell Memorial Library and Old Main.
The University of Southern Mississippi is located in Hattiesburg in – you guessed it – southern Mississippi. Home to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, the USM 1,086-acre campus has an enrollment of 15,000 students, and features Eagle Walk, All-American Rose Garden, and Shoemaker Square – all near Ellisville.
USM also features a secondary campus, the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park. Set in Long Beach near Gulfport, the campus is famous for its Spanish Mission architecture, and the legendary Friendship Oak.
Other four-year, public institutions include Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena near Greenwood, Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Delta State University in Cleveland near Indianola, Alcorn State University in Lorman, and Jackson State University in Jackson.
